Slow Art Day at PoCo

Slow Art Day at PoCo Boosts Mental Health

On Saturday, April 11, it is International Slow Art Day. PoCo Museum in Rotermann invites all residents of the quarter to enjoy slow observation, deeper engagement, and recovery from attention fatigue on this day.

Slow Art Day is a global initiative created to change how people experience art. The aim of the event is to slow down the pace, deepen the art experience, make art more accessible, and bring people back into the present moment.

“Studies have shown that visiting a museum evokes joy and excitement, reduces stress, and promotes creativity and inspiration. In an increasingly fast-paced world, we no longer fully experience what surrounds us. A museum, however, is a place where one can consciously slow down and experience without distractions. In the future, guided museum visits could become part of a so-called ‘cultural prescription,’ supporting people’s mental well-being in a systematic way. This is already being done in several countries,” explained Anu Viltrop, Executive Director of the Estonian Museums Association, highlighting the importance of the initiative.

Participating in Slow Art Day is very simple:

  • Visit one or more of the museums listed in the program below
  • Put your smartphone away during your visit (in the cloakroom, bag, or pocket—preferably on silent)
  • Choose 1–5 artworks or museum objects to observe (ask for recommendations and guidance at the museum desk)
  • Study these objects in depth. Many museums offer guiding ideas and prompts to support reflection and concentration, helping you practice slowing down
